About this deal

Since a patent must be filed within one year of the invention, the earliest date for introduction of a golf ball with this dimple pattern must be around August 1,1988. This dimple pattern was designed so that the ball would have aerodynamic symmetry in flight regardless of its position on the tee or the ground.

In my golf ball collection there are three Spalding golf balls that appear on the USGA Conforming Golf Ball lists that have this dimple pattern. The TOP-FLITE XL II, which had only 410 dimples, had medium TDV, but surprisingly the highest trajectory, and medium roll. By putting a serial number on each ball, Spalding could go back to the day, time, and batch the ball was made in to see what caused the ball to cut, scrape, or crack. The advertisement sheet that was enclosed with my golf ball gift was also very interesting to me because it showed that the three different golf balls shown, had three different flight trajectories. So all of our thinking about mechanics has to be adapted to what our bodies are capable of in terms of strength and flexibility.

Bob) Molitor, Golf Ball Inventor, 89, of Peoria, IL, and formerly of South Hadley, passed away on July 20, at home. The first entry was “Spalding Molitor (All markings on seam) and the second entry was ‘Spalding Molitor (Molitor on pole)’. These three golf balls all have 324 circular dimples arranged in a modified icosahedron pattern (four dimples were removed in each polar region for the name and number). The Top Flite golf ball had excellent durability and the new Surlyn cover did not crack when exposed to cold temperatures.
