About this deal

The author identifies Seven Mental states and leverages Creative cycles and uses them to create Creative systems. As I mentioned at poing 1 for the productivity advice I would give 5 stars - despite in some points its more good collection (and connection) which was already said in other forms.

Mind management, not time management provides the tools you need to make the most out of creatieve energy. Even if something is in my calendar, the act of typing it out into this list helps program it into my brain, while also reminding me to think about any details I might not have thought about yet (for example, if my flight on Wednesday is at 2pm, what time should I head to the airport? What Kadavy offers is a unique approach, catered to a specific kind of work, that he has tried and tested over the years.

Thought-provoking for any of us who identify with Kadavy's self-description of constantly finding ways to do more and more things in less and less time. Jerry Seinfeld addresses this problem as it relates to producing stand up comedy material, a practice he has consistently done for over 40 years. I felt this book's aim, or marketing spiel, is to give you tips you help you structure your creativity and productivity in an easy-to-do way. David should decide if he want to present those tools, himself and his life or some actual creative work (personaly I would present those parts separately).

You may need to do a little (or a lot) of your own thinking and experimenting to get all the benefits this book offers, but the meat (or, insert your favorite plant-based protein) is there, if you are willing to eat it and digest it. The book has caused me to match what tasks I need to accomplish with the mental state that Kadavy describes. Kadavy explains that we often cite the concept that we all have the same 24 hours per day which can lead us to falsely assume that they are created equal and we can simply map out the hours to schedule all that we must do. He was design advisor for behavioral scientist Dan Ariely’s productivity app, Timeful, where David’s “mind management” principles were applied to features now used by millions – in Google Calendar. Your Brian is plastic: Each time you perform a thought or action, you make it easier for your brain to reproduce that thought or action.net and his podcast, Love Your Work, he helps people find satisfaction through following their crafts, even if it takes them down unconventional paths.

The Seven Mental States of Creative Work: Starting with the ideas from Deep Work, but realizing there were different flavors, David has done the experimentation and verification in his own life, confirming what he was finding with other creators and teachers and scientists along the way, and given us the fruit, that we can apply in our own lives, experimenting and tweaking as he encourages us. This is because you have learned to harness the power of your own mind, and work with it as you face whatever life throws at you. They can be cultivated by environment and rhythms, but for each of us they are not all available all the time.If you're in a place where you're mostly working solo or driving a creative venture (podcast/writing/self-branding empire) then this is a nice read to see how someone in the same boat solved his issues and built his routine, with (quite a large amount of) personal stories splashed in for color.
