Kubrick had dealt with war movies before, but only in black and white, and whilst neither the clinical, almost prison-like training facilities, nor the shell-ridden, wartorn battlefronts particularly lend themselves to his trademark, visually opulent, style, the director's guiding hand remains evident on every single shot here, and even more so with this gorgeously HDR graded native 4K presentation.

Kubrick remains on point throughout the piece, however, when it comes to some exquisite cinematography, perfectly framing his shots, and capturing both the claustrophobia and the scale of the battle, as well as the sheer geometry involved in some of the conflicts. Everything is done very professionally with this company and always lets you know every step of the process. It was a subtle way to show that in fact, the marines thought this war and evil was indeed crap, hence the term Mickey Mouse was used as slang to describe something as amateur, which is why all the marching and singing of the Mickey Mouse song is heard, as it stood as a symbol for America. In its 4K UHD Blu-ray debut, Full Metal Jacket comes to us from a new 4K restoration and it looks downright marvelous, especially when looking back at the 2007 Blu-ray as a comparison (as I did above). It took him seven months to put the weight on, and nine months to take it off with physical training. I honestly was taken back at first by the 4K presentation and its amount of new detail here, and how it almost feels like an entirely new film.

As far as its realism, I have spoken with at least 1 Vietnam veteran who said that this is the best movie about that war.

The performances in this film given by Matthew Modine, Vincent D’Onofrio, Adam Baldwin, and the late R.I remember being blown away by the first part because it was the best depiction of boot camp I'd seen on film.
