About this deal

According to material contained in the production file for this film at the AMPAS Library, the original Carlo Collodi story was written in installments for an Italian weekly magazine.

I read in an interview that Karloff’s makeup was so gruesome that the actress had trouble acting with him. The exhausted Henry is taken home after Waldman promises to destroy the monster, but instead Waldman is killed by the escaping monster. Suffering a nervous breakdown, Henry was taken home by Elizabeth, Victor, and his father, Baron Frankenstein. And the producers of Frankenstein knew it, too—and were sufficiently worried to tack a prologue onto their film. As soon as the person has life, Victor realizes his creation is a monster and immediately regrets the monster he has brought to life. Switzerland is a federal republic consisting of 26 cantons, with Bern as the seat of the federal authorities.

The file also indicates that some regional censorship agencies made minor eliminations from the film before its release. This is a beautiful scene, and beautifully acted by Colin Clive; and fascinatingly, it was not in the shooting script. The 1931 film, Frankenstein, which was directed by James Whale changed the mad-scientist/horror movie scene permanently. Although early in production the feasibility of Lugosi playing Frankenstein himself had in fact been discussed, it was not long before, to the actor’s outrage and disgust, he was chosen to play the Creature.Admitting that, yeah, parts of this classic film are absolute stinkers… but still picking out the good bits.

Yet as I say, most of this may only be apparent after the event, or upon subsequent viewings; because there is also much in Frankenstein to love and to admire. It launched numerous sequels and versions including Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Son of Frankenstein (1939), and Young Frankenstein (1974). Frankenstein, is about a young man, Victor Frankenstein, who is obsessed with science and trying to find the secret to life. In Frankenstein, the most significant cuts were to the scientist’s declaration of his divine presumption, and to the Creature’s drowning of Maria—the latter, of course, leaving behind a far more upsetting implication.Rejected by its creator, chained up in a prison, beaten and tortured by Fritz, threatened with destruction at all turns— Of course it becomes violent! Even as Dracula originally concluded with Edward Van Sloan, as Van Helsing, reminding people that, “After all, there are such things! In the presence of Henry’s friends: Victor, Elizabeth, and Professor Waldman, Henry brought his monster to life in the memorable scene where he exclaims, “It’s alive! The exact location of Frankenstein Village is never revealed in any of the films, but the August 12th, 1930 shooting script for Frankenstein indicates that it is located in Switzerland. Frankenstein opens with Van Sloan warning the audience that the upcoming film might, “Thrill – shock – even horrify!

Any future Frankenstein film that features any of these physical abnormalities is taking its inspiration from Pierce's make-up work” (Trivia). Upon the denial of access to a selective system of cadaver procurement, Frankenstein leaves Goldstadt Medical College and holes up with his faithful lab assistant Fritz, in an abandoned watchtower where he performs his experiments away from the eyes of a curious public. Also featured in Frankenstein is Lionel Belmore, who plays the Burgomaster—and who would continue to do so, or at least appear in a similar role, in just about all of the Universal horror films that followed this one. And yes, poor Robert Florey, too, would soon find himself replaced; certainly not through any fault of his own, whose enthusiasm for the project is well-documented, but simply because another director was, at the time, more in favour on the Universal lot.Frankenstein was on NYT list of "10 best" films for 1931, and was one of the top box office films of 1932.
