About this deal

I also have m12 batteries and might look into it too but not really a high priority tool purchase right now. I'd read a number of extremely negative comments about the DCN690 and one or two bad comments about this tool. i was doing a loft conversion job at the time so the gun was used side by side with my makita first fix gun.

I've now used about 4 boxes of nails (3300 nails per box – it's been mainly 90mm plain shanks as well), so I think I've got a reasonable idea of how the tool works. I have talked to a DW insider who told mne that there was certainly a straight 16 gauge nailer prototype made, but he couldn't tell me what had happened to it. The “running in” period is deWalt's term for the bedding period (between 500 and 1,000 nails) during which period the tool was indeed a bit tight and sometimes wouldn't flush longer nails completely. The Hikoki NP18DSALW4Z 18V 23 Gauge Pin Nailer is a lightweight and compact piece of equipment, ideal for working with nails between 15 and 35mm in length.

One of the advantages of using a nail gun is that it saves time and effort compared to using manual tools. Gone is the scary trip into the innards of the tool to replace the drive pin if it shears off (and again, this happens to all nailers, of all types, from time to time in trade volume use). Recently I took advantage of the President’s holiday sales to purchase my DeWALT Atomic Compact DCN623D1 23 GA pin nailer kit.

I'll start this review by stating what I do for a living – I'm a carpenter and joiner doing mainly site work and I do almost anything from (basic) shuttering to roofing work (at a push) and almost everything in between, or so it seems. We've also got an older Axminster (air) 23ga nailer which has been great, but the last guy I know who bought one said the nail clip flew open everytime he shot a pin! Apart from a conventional squeeze trigger in the handle the tool incorporates a lock/unlock button at the rear of the motor housing (see sequential and bump mode photo above). Pity dewalt chose to do an angle only unit when 90% of site users have a straight nailer and that's all the sites supply in terms of nails.Recoil is reduced thanks to the inherent reaction reducing device, offering users a safer and more precise nailing experience. Squeezing either / both triggers immediately after battery removal DOES NOT activate the headlight and does not fire a nail. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. The following are trademarks for one or more DEWALT power tools, accessories, anchors and concrete adhesives: The yellow and black color scheme; the “D”-shaped air intake grill; the array of pyramids on the handgrip; the kit box configuration; and the array of lozenge-shaped humps on the surface of the tool.

The controls, with the exception of the speed control hidden away below the rafter hook, fall easily to hand and the tool is short enough to be able to get into most spaces, such as between 400mm centres joists. Grex work perfectly in my Hitachi pneumatic pin nailer, but they are too weakly joined to handle the thump from a cordless unit. In fact the only aspect of this gun I still dislike is the weight – but even there I've learned to live with it. I wasn't too keen at first due to worries about battery platform "creep" but it's performance makes up for that.

I looked at axminster who do a 24 gauge nailer, but as far as I can see 24 gauge nails arent widely available, and the max depth is about 20mm. Gas guns are known to corrode battery terminals with a black, non-conductive “deposit” at a rate of knots (and which regular user hasn't had blackened battery terminals at one time or another?

I only got one jam which I sorted out in seconds and it punched the nails right in from the word go. Photographs are terrible, I know, but then I am a carpenter and not a photographer - and the pics were taken on my phone.

The mechanism might be similar to and scaled up from the original second fix guns, but maintenance is considerably improved.
