White Lightning" is dedicated to the memory of Clark, [7] who has writing credits on six of the album's ten tracks. The band included a re-recording of Hysteria B-Side 'Tear It Down' due to it's popularity after the 1989 MTV Awards. If anything, the opposite is true — the band’s music seems so effortlessly accessible that most listeners probably don’t even notice the incredible amount of craft that goes into each release. Def Leppard had faced long delays, and the challenge of drummer Rick Allen losing his arm while making their previous album, Hysteria, and while trying to follow up the success, they also faced the prospect of doing so with a different producer, as Robert John "Mutt" Lange was already working with Bryan Adams. The album featured huge singles such as "Let’s Get Rocked" and "Make Love Like A Man" and debuted at No 1 in both the UK and USA (and went on to sell over 7 million copies).

Adrenalize, Def Leppards fifth studio album from 1992, followed the enormous Hysteria (released in 1987) and cemented the band as the dominant arena rock band.The album followed on from the tragedy in 1991 of Steve Clark's death and was finished off as a tribute to his memory. Perhaps inevitably, however, Leppard were at their most ambitious on “White Lightning”: an epic, seven-minute salute to their fallen comrade, on which Phil Collen summoned up some astounding lead playing. Accordingly, Collen felt Clark’s loss especially deeply when he shouldered the burden of playing all the guitars on Adrenalize.

The song received radio airplay and was performed by the band live at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards. Still Managed to Stay at Number One on the Billboard Charts for 6 Weeks in 1992 and Sell Over 8 Million Copies Worldwide. At the same time this was also issued in Japan (no picture disc) along with a Mega Edition featuring these two tracks on CD1 and the 'In The Clubs-In Your Face' Live E.
