About this deal

This is something I always do, when something comes up that I want to really understand, I read as much as I can written from every perspective. Why settle for diminishing the human spirit and minimal competencies when our wonderful, unique children and young people can take control of their own lives and learning. She is the mother of two and the author of several books on psychology, education and mental health. Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall). It feels even more desperately important since families have been expected to recreate school at home during lockdown which for most has been traumatic and near impossible.

Naomi Fisher is a clinical psychologist whose first book Changing Our Minds: How Children Can Take Control of Their Own Learning is out now, published by Little, Brown. From this platform Dr Fisher advances the meaning of self-directed education as a fulfilment not just of the individual but also of society and an answer to the question of who we want to be. I was horrified that it could be published when it was so mediocre and that a new home educator might pick it up without realising that it wasn’t really about home education. Unschooling is such a natural way for a child to live and thrive but is so against the grain for us adults who were schooled such that following this path can surface a lot of mental and emotional stuff for the parents to reconcile with.Changing Our Minds blows apart the myths and assumptions underpinning not just compulsory schooling but also wider societal attitudes to topics such as mental health, children's rights and ideas about what constitutes a fulfilling life. Dr Fisher argues cogently yet quietly that education is not a standalone issue based on some esoteric science of learning and teaching but rather an expression of our relationships, identity, place in the world and, ultimately, humanity.
