It’s been a few weeks since I finished reading this, and I still find myself going back and thinking about it. She brought such presence (and by presence, I mean staring a cobra directly in the face kinda presence). Full disclosure, first person narratives are not my favourite, especially when there's trauma involved, it can be exhausting, so I think this is definitely a case of "it's not you, it's me" as most reviews are 4 and 5 star.

Eighteen-year-old Lily does everything to please her mother; she carries out her every whim, makes her spoiled juice every night and even dyes her hair and paints her face to look more like the good Chinese daughter she wants. I don���t think I have read any fiction carrying a dysfunctional family theme with this bunch of mental health issues before. This is a literary novel exploring the nuanced, complex relationships between a family riddled with generational abuse. Ella King has done a wonderful job of building the story in a way that makes you feel like you are going at the same pace as Lily.
Perfect for those who enjoyed Natsuo Kirino's underrated mishmash of thriller and body horror, Grotesque. I am blown away by Ella’s talent for writing not only wonderful prose but complex and intriguing characters.
This is an exceptional novel about a toxic mother-daughter relationship and I found it extremely difficult to put down. A masterful exploration of mothers and daughters, inherited trauma and the race to break its devastating cycle, BAD FRUIT will leave readers breathlessly questioning their own notions of femininity, race and redemption. These scenes made me feel really angry for Lily, and I wanted her to be able to get away from her family.
