About this deal

The main character is Joe, a seventeen-year-old boy who hasn’t seen his older brother in ten years, and that’s because Ed is locked up on death row in a prison farm in Texas. The finale doesn't ring true to the rest of the story before it, however Moonrise, as any entry in the Grand Tour series before it, is a standalone novel definitely worth reading. Sarah Crossan tells a very special story, an incredibly realistic one, and she does so in such a poetical, emotional, and meaningful way that I think I’ll take it and its characters with me for the rest of my life. I’ve always loved Crossan’s books because of her simple way of telling a story in such a powerful and poetic way. With the exception of a disused mine, the forest in which the cats live is based largely on the New Forest.

This is a brutally emotional novel in verse that explores the complexity of the American justice system, the death penalty, and the irreparable toll taken on the families of loved ones who are in the penal system. His novel The Starcrossed was loosely based on his experiences and featured a thinly veiled characterization of his friend and colleague Harlan Ellison. Everyone believes that Salil Singh killed his girlfriend, Andrea Bell, five years ago—except Pippa Fitz-Amobi. Really, it's about the bizarre broken family and corporate dynamic of Masterson Aerospace and the rise of nanotechnology in Ben Bova's universe. These main characters are known as Brambleclaw, Squirrelpaw, Tawnypelt, Crowpaw, Stormfur and Feathertail.

The opening introduces us to Joe who is seven years old when he finds out his brother, Ed is in prison and is being charged with murder despite his protests to his brother that he didn’t do I Ten years on, Joe is the only person still standing by Ed, even the rest of his family have turned on him and he has moved closer to the prison to spend the last weeks of his brother’s life with him as his execution date has been set. What makes Moonrise such a fantastic novel however isn't just this grand scale political story, but the way this canvas is shown to us through the eyes of very believeable, understandable characters, and how the events of the novel drive these people to stand at the turning points of human history. This is the story of the early development of the new frontier on the moon, bound up by the lives of a far knit family. Death row injustice and undying brotherly love in a lyrical, beautiful writing in verse form that will ultimately break your heart in this exploration of family relationships as Ed waits in the death cell in a US prison.

eloquent usage of language in this deeply affecting novel puts readers right at the heart of a very sensitive and timely story. Between capital punishment, police and governmental corruption, coerced confessions and the appeals process, through to poverty, parental neglect and injustice more generally, you can barely go a few pages at a time without being challenged to reflect on some hard-to-swallow realities. However, one day his mother kicks him out when he confronts her which is what led to Ed disappearing and eventually getting arrested. The cover depicts a beautiful scene from within the book, and yes it had me emotional, and eyes all bleary with tears. However, his sister and aunt have arrived and with the exception of his mother, the family are together and will be until the end.

Its highly original premise combined with her beautiful storytelling through the medium of verse make this a book that will stay with me for a long time. Everything is a steep learning curve for Joe, never having lived alone, not knowing anyone other than the waitresses at the diner and no money for entertainment even if there were things to do in Kirkland. Two unlikely but resilient friends yearn to know who they really are in this sensitively told novel in verse. Some brands and media mentioned, mostly for scene setting, including, Walmart, Star Wars, Mitsubishi, Converse, Greyhound, Coke, Dr. Joe decides to make the bold move of going across the country to see Ed and support him in the weeks leading up to the execution date.Through Joe, Crossan creates a portrait of family life at a time when the family in question is facing the unimaginable, weaving together reflections from the present day countdown to the execution day with memories of his younger self – back when Ed was at home, his mother hadn’t abandoned him yet and his older brother could do no wrong in Joe’s eyes. The story provides a sobering look at the ripple effect incarceration has on loved ones and how the justice system treats the poor. The work was also a success in Canada, reaching number seven on the Leader-Post children's bestseller list, [21] and remaining in the top 15 for seven weeks. Using her customary poetry style and from the viewpoint of Joe Moon, she interweaves the last weeks of his brother Ed's life on death row with their memories of growing up. I thought the politics of this novel were well thought out, and I can believe some of the more fervent followers of the anti-nano organization.

Ed has been arrested and it's for something serious, people may start saying awful things about him and he needs Joe to know he didn't do it. Moonrise has been translated into various foreign languages: it was released in Russian on 18 October 2005, by OLMA Media Group, [9] in Japanese on 18 March 2009, by Komine Shoten, [10] and in French on 5 March 2009, by Pocket Jeunesse. Narrating in image-rich free verse that packs an emotional punch, Kasienka describes what life is like for a new arrival while also exploring universal themes. In 2000, he was the Author Guest of Honor at the 58th World Science Fiction Convention (Chicon 2000). While staying in a filthy apartment and trying to work to keep himself alive, Joe finds himself visiting and spending time with Ed, all the while wondering whether Ed is innocent or guilty… and whether he can live knowing the answer. Teenager Joe hasn’t seen his big brother for ten years, since Ed’s on death row in a Texan prison for a murder for which he’s always claimed innocence. Moonrise encapsulates the decline of the Moon family after the eldest brother, Ed, is incarcerated for allegedly killing a police officer. A bit of a jump in focus and topic from Mars, Moonrise is more similar to Privateers et al (the Dan Randolph books), with more of a focus on corporate structure over science.
