About this deal

Limiting herself to this vantage point, Crispin intersperses her card descriptions with ties to artists and artwork that reflect their themes and issues.

Information on the history of different decks is briefly covered, but ultimately she suggests picking a deck that speaks to the reader. She has a nice overview of the structure of the deck: the suits, the major and minor arcana, and their general meanings. Her first book, The Dead Ladies Project: Exile, Expats and Ex-Countries is forthcoming from the University of Chicago Press. With the Queen of Wands, she talks about photographer Sally Mann, and how when taking photographs of her children for her art she "she couldn’t worry how the images of her half-naked five-year-old daughter would be seen by others—she had to put that aside to take the shot. Since the book’s not about your common understanding of the cards, it’s not afraid to hash out some truths – the Lovers as a terrible card, for example.

Novice and expert alike will also benefit from the five uncomplicated and mostly original spreads (how the cards are laid out for reading). The content moves quickly so you can read through the book on a Sunday afternoon or study it intently, looking up every work of art mentioned to get a better grasp of what’s being said. To me, this implies heavily that for the sake of her art, Mann couldn’t/shouldn't worry about pedophiles seeing and reacting to pictures of her children.

There’s also nothing wrong with using tools to help you find that inspiration at your desk rather than in the wild and unpredictable world.

I picked this up based on Heidi The Hippie Librarian's review, as well as on the strength of the title, 'A Modern Guide to an Inspired Life. I’ve had my face read in Chinatown, dragged there by a Malaysian friend who swears it’s an accurate, ancient practice. The guide helps you find exactly what you need and provides the ancient interpretations and Crispin's new modern take. There’s artistry at work here — in the writing, yes, but also in the careful and deliberate creation of a platform primed to sell, promote, and launch a niche-interest book into the mainstream. Have you only been thinking of the Magician as a manifesting your own destiny rather than, simply, “knock it off and go do the thing”?The commentary on each card concludes with a short list of books, movies, or paintings to explore: for the Magician, Shakespeare’s The Tempest or the paintings of Hilma af Klint; for the Priestess, Silvina Ocampo’s The Topless Tower or Blake’s The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun; and for Death, John Everett Millais’ painting of Ophelia. The suggestions on how the cards could be interpreted to inspire, support, and review artistic and creative work, e. The tone in The Creative Tarot is very friendly and conversational, as if you asked your best friend to teach you a little bit about her favorite hobby- tarot cards.
