About this deal

While resistant initially, Brian discovers purpose in Tyler's world, but it strains his relationships with other friends.

When he meets Tyler, who seems to have everything sorted out and is also a werewolf, maybe it is the chance Brian needs to get his life on track. Tyler, a Millennial were-mentor, takes notice of Brian's unique condition and offers him an opportunity to join forces in taking on the mythological world. Equally engaging, if decidedly less sympathetic, is entrepreneurial grifter Tyler, whose comeuppance I was vying for almost as soon as he shows up, seemingly wanting to control Brian from the off. Restaurant manager Nik and co-worker Darby – both marvellous, vibrant characters – represent the light of this narrative: Brian is eager to have closer companionship with them, but maintains frustratingly arm’s-length friendships.

The focus on Brian's relationships dominates most of the story, and parts of the middle can feel slow with sequences of exercising, meditating, and hiking.

The portrayal of Grindr hookups, navigating tokenization in a group of girlfriends, and the complex self-loathing associated with seeking approval from DL guys paints a vivid picture that resonates with those familiar with such experiences. Personally, I prefer the satirical and somewhat bitter tone of the beginning, and as such, I was hoping for a different ending. I wish we'd got to know Mark somewhat more, as I felt there was more to know maybe after the first time we meet him. The werewolf lore was a great allegory for how toxic MLMs and cults prey on vulnerable people and this book does a great job exploring that in a really humorous and smart way. It gave me the same fun and campy feels as a cheesy 00s horror comedy, and I think we should bring that genre back. The book's inclusion of popular TV shows and literature was a delightful addition that allowed us to explore and experience the references for ourselves. But seeing the description of this book being of a gay man in a dead end job trying to work out where he'd going in life. Bored Gay Werewolf is very much about finding your pack and embracing the people who embrace you for who you are, rather than changing yourself to fit in with people you don’t even want to fit in with in the first place. He’s been struggling to manage his transition to adulthood almost as much as his monthly transitions to a werewolf.

But, if you need more than that, then it’s gorgeous and goofy and anarchic and funny and so smart on the doomsday logic of late capitalism and the nexus of masculinity and sexuality. The witty banter between the characters is genuinely funny, and I loved Brian’s cynical, bemused, and indeed, bored, narration. Tyler has got a plan, and weirdly his brand of self-help punditry actually encourages Brian to shape up and to stop accidently marking out guys who ghosted him on Grindr as potential monthly victims. Being my first experience with Tony's work, and after reading this story, I'm eager to explore more of his books in the future. Brian, an aimless slacker, works doubles at his shift job, forgets to clean his room and lays about with his friends Nik and Darby. But this stranger’s motives might not be as pure as Brian first thinks, and this new relationship puts a strain on Brian’s friendships. I’m hoping the way it ended means there is another book on the horizon – I’d love to see Brian’s adventures continue with Nik and Darby by his side!
