From Mr. English’s research into the murky history of the drink, it appears that the most likely origin of the Paloma was that it evolved naturally following the invention of Squirt grapefruit soda. Squirt has been around since the late ‘30s, but didn’t make it to Mexico until 1955. It’s likely that soon after being introduced, folks started casually mixing it with tequila, and somehow later it came to be known as the Paloma. Freshly squeezed lime juice is a key ingredient for margaritas. Don’t use bottles of lime juice, the flavor is muted and flat. Fresh limes make all the difference. Sweetener For the safest storage, keep your alcohol infusions in the fridge for longer-term storage. Tequilas that are aged already have flavors to them, so for the best strawberry flavor, use blanco tequila, or silver tequila, for this infusion. 🍽️ recipe Serve: tequila infused strawberries are good at room temperature for about 4 hours before they get really gross. Strawberry Margarita Slushy: mix tequila, triple sec, sliced strawberries and frozen limeade concentrate together in a blender with some ice. Stir in the infused strawberries when you’re ready to serve it up to add a sweet, boozy texture. Make sure that you wash them well, and trim and hull them for the best flavor. Strawberry hulls don’t have too much flavor, and can even be bitter, so I like to leave them out. The leaves of strawberries are also safe to eat, but they do impart a leafy green taste to the finished infusion. It’s up to you, though! Muddle a couple of jalapeño slices with your strawberries to add some heat to your Paloma. If you have a favorite hot sauce, you could add a dash or two to the shaker instead of using jalapeños. I used Fever-Tree Sparkling Pink Grapefruit in this recipe. It’s a bit floral and not too sweet, so it’s great with strawberries. Have grapefruits but no grapefruit soda? Just like how only sparkling wine from the Champagne region of France can be called champagne, only liquor made in the Mexican state of Jalisco can officially be called tequila. That doesn’t stop other manufacturers from unofficially calling their liquors tequila, though. In a medium saucepan, combine the strawberries, sugar and water. Set over medium high heat, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar. Bring the syrup to a boil and reduce to simmer. Simmer for 5 minutes.
