Please note- Varnish should not be transferred into plastic containers, as it may damage the plastic.

In addition to preserving artwork, and offering protection against dirt and dust, a varnish evens out the final appearance of the paint, ensuring a uniform finish. Varnish should be poured into another container both for thinning, if necessary, and to prevent contamination. For certain works glossy finishes just don’t look ‘right’, so matt or nearly matt might be most appropriate; I often think that small paintings look a little odd when too glossy for example, the gloss seems out of scale with the work somehow, so size might be a deciding factor also. It’s best to use a specialist varnish brush but any wide, flat brush of the right length can be used as long as the bristles are not too soft; hog bristle is probably best but there are good synthetic options. Each brushstroke should slightly overlap the previous so that you don’t leave thin spots or narrow bands uncovered but if these do occur don’t overwork the surface trying to rectify it, leave it for the next coat to even out.I’m not sure but I think Golden might have something on this too, either way you could apply their similar products to much the same effect I’m sure. Liquitex Professional Varnish provides a layer of protection for acrylic paintings and intensifies acrylic colour.

Epifanes Clear High Gloss Varnish, known around the world, is considered the ultimate in high gloss finish. When coating surfaces finished with a coloured varnish, a maximum of 5% of the coloured varnish can be added to the product if necessary. I used to just use gloss medium as the varnish but was told that coating the surface of the painting with that was a bad idea since it can not be removed. To enjoy all that Hobbycraft has to offer, please enable cookies or check whether another programme is blocking them. For applications according to the Marine Equipment Directive, the maximum wet application quantity is 3 x 120 µm. When you’re done, the painting needs to be protected during drying so you will have to improvise something to prevent dust landing on the surface, a board held a couple of inches over the surface on two stacks of books is probably easiest. I have played safe between layers and left it to cure before re-coating, as I want to try to get a really resilient finish.
