Learning Magazine's 2008 Teachers' Choice Award Describe where your birthday is as a fraction of the year- My birthday is in April, that is about 1/3 of the way through the year. The video could be stopped at various points and children could be asked to find triangles in the picture. One penguin delivered to your doorstep is cute (if not strange), two is a coincidence, but three, four, five? For this family, a penguin is delivered to their house every day for a year. And as the penguins pile up, so do the family’s problems. Just feeding the penguins becomes a monumental task - and that’s not to mention how smelly they are… This book is sure to be a hit with your children.

In one minute, you can blink your eyes twenty times, hug your dog, plant seeds, say good-bye, watch the rain, or even save a life. So much can occur in this sliver of time—one minute can feel like a singular experience. This poignant picture book is at once an introduction to time for young readers, an ode to living each moment with purpose, and a thoughtful exploration of how children experience one minute (may it seem short or long) playfully, profoundly, and with a boundless sense of possibility. Learning to count has never been more fun than in this crazy tale of a dog, a lion and a tiger all showing off how many apples they can balance on their heads as they skip, walk the tightrope and roller skate their way through the book. He had only one hat. It was an old one that had belonged to his father and his father's father before him. It was probably the oldest and the plainest hat in the whole Kingdom of Didd, where Bartholomew Cubbins lived. But Bartholomew liked it - especially because of the feather that always pointed straight up in the air.

In all of these cases of organization, the book talks about the solution breaking at some point. Once you have 145 penguins, a dozen boxes of a dozen each isn’t enough. Once you have 217 penguins, you can’t organize them in a cube. (It’s not entirely clear why the family can’t buy more boxes or have an incomplete rectangular prism layer, though…) Join Baby and his mama at the bustling marketplace for a bright, bouncy read-aloud offering a gentle introduction to numbers. Hi dee ho! It's off to a picnic we go! One hundred very hungry ants hurry to sample the delights of a picnic, but marching in single file seems too slow for 100 empty tummies. The smallest ant of all suggests they travel in 2 rows of 50, four rows of 25 . . . and the division begins. One Hundred Hungry Ants is not only a spirited and whimsical story, but also serves as an enjoyable visual introduction to math. This encouraging tale of creative achievement is centred around the journey of a lovable character. Paired with unique and involving illustrations, this is a gentle introduction to the world of architecture. It’s important near the end that 365 is odd. There are 182 pairs of penguins plus one penguin, Chilly, who has blue feet instead of orange ones.

Gilbert the penguin has always wanted to fly. But with only small, fluffy wings as his aid, learning to fly is a bigger challenge than he ever thought it would be. The other penguins tell Gilbert there’s no use, and that he’ll never be able to fly, but Gilbert is determined and won’t let any obstacle stand in his way. Robyn Boid studied Architecture at the National University, and dreamed of becoming an architect. Meet Robyn Boid — a small, dedicated bird who loves to build nests and dreams of becoming an architect. She lives at the University, where she listens to the architecture class through the window each day. Eager to learn, Robyn practises building all the important architectural shapes, but all the while, she seeks the perfect design for her very own nest. There’s a pretty far-fetched reason (related to global warming) a the end for why the family had ended up with 365 penguins over the course of the year. The book knows its far-fetched, but it was still my least favorite part of the book. The ecological message is weak at best and probably undermined by the rest of the book (the penguins being in an unideal environment, etc.). But for me, the mathiness makes up for that. The next organization method is to put the penguins in a dozen boxes of a dozen each. The book asks the reader how many penguins this is. (The answer is hidden in the illustration, upside down on a calculator.) The boxes for the penguins are all labeled: “1->12,” “13->24,” “25-36,” etc.

Again, don't try to analyze the sanity and the reasonableness of this decision. As I said, this is a fun book to play with maths and learn about months and days. The book talks about how much fish each penguin eats per day, and so how much fish all the penguins each together per day when they have 100 penguins. Blue Penguin is just like the other penguins, except he’s blue, and the other penguins don’t think he’s the same as them. Blue Penguin is left all alone. Can he think of a way to convince the other penguins that he’s like them, after all? Meet Robyn Boid - a small, dedicated bird who loves to build nests and dreams of becoming an architect. She lives at the University, where she listens to the architecture class through the window each day. Eager to learn, Robyn practises building all the important architectural shapes, but all the while, she seeks the perfect design for her very own nest. A family are somewhat bemused when they receive a gift of a penguin on January 1st. Then another one arrives the next day, and another on the third. So it goes, as a new penguin arrives every day for a year. Needless to say, this involves the family in all sorts of problems - how does one care for so many penguins?! - but it also presents some opportunities for fun mathematical problems. In the end, the mystery of who is sending these avian guests is resolved... One penguin is delivered on each day, and they’re all delivered with notes. For the nth penguin, the note starts with, “I’m number n.” Throughout the book, the narration really reinforces the one-to-one correspondence between the day of the year and the number of penguins in the house.
