Description
Anyhoozle, after reading it twice it hit me why I like this story/these characters so much: it's reverse harem Sixteen Candles! A while back I read Harley Laroux’s short story The Dare about Jessica, a former cheerleader and prom queen who’s reunited on Halloween with her onetime victim, Manson. The dare is one of my favourite novellas ever, so make sure you read it first because it starts everything off for losers. He glanced over his shoulder at me with a grin, his long hair messily tied up as he added another pancake to the stack in front of him.
We know from The Dare that Jessica was cruel, the popular girl who everyone wanted to be, except herself. Still what’s lurking deep inside her is her fantasies and that Halloween night she shared with Manson and the guys. Although not required, it is recommended to listen to the novella The Dare before listening to Losers. In my opinion Jaclyn did a better job even when narrating the boys point of views in Jess's chapters and the audiobook would have benefited from her reading it all. When cocky Jessica loses the game, she becomes Manson's slave for the night, and what ensues is a dark game of pleasure and pain, intense fetishes, hard punishments, and Jessica's realization that she can't get enough of Manson's dark cruelty.
I will say that I will always have a soft spot for Manson, but all the guys are hot as hell, and have the best mouths. I’m sure there are way more, but these are the ones I found when reading, which didn’t bother me one bit. I quite literally teared up in the first 30 pages over their interactions because you can just feel the love these guys have. But if you're walking around town and one of us happens to snatch you up, you'd better be ready for it. Getting that sad look off your face," he said, smiling at me crookedly as he stopped next to my bed.
Subjects include mental illness, trauma, childhood abuse (physical and emotional), body shaming (by a parent to their adult child), parental rejection, bullying, instances of homophobia/biphobia, and discussions of suicide. Also, I've mentioned before that I'm not too keen on M/M if I feel that it detracts from the heroine, but I think it's handled well here; it's quite clear that Jess means something special to all the boys even when they have personal relationships with each other.
First of all, I must say this is the first time I read a dark-erotic-romance novel, and I'm so happy it was with this book. The game they’re playing is slowly changing into something more, and they all struggle with their budding feelings, because it’s only meant to be temporary. The fact that they were open about this, the way they discussed relationships, romantic feelings and how each relationship can be different but still equal.
The characters are beautiful, the story has been a rollercoaster and even some parts had me on the edge of my seat in suspense. He may be a jerk, but when it comes to Jessica, he’s trying to hide his soft side with her in his own twisted way. I don't mind if it's a sometimes, but I wish there had been more group scenes that didn't involve her being stuffed in the mouth. it probably now seems odd for someone complaining this much to put a disclaimer at the beginning saying “i didn’t dislike this book”. Tipstone during the normal conversation parts but I hated the way the spicy scenes were narrated and it really took me out of the story.
I better not see anyone bitching about her on their reviews or I’ll have to defend her with my life. Jaclyn Kelso does a great job narrating all characters in the spicy scenes, while keeping the tempo up, which I assume is a tough one to pull. I don't remember them from the original novella, but they've now appeared as fellow former victims of Jess who are all too keen to get their revenge.i don’t even care to read a whole book about her, much less one filled with a constant stream of undeserved praise towards her. I've read pretty much all of the Harley Laroux books but this one is definitely in my top 1 right next to the souls trilogy! Jessica will realize in this book who she shouldn’t trust, and it’s not her friends from high school.
