If you have ever used Lawn Sand you may have experienced severe lawn damage as well. Unless kept dry, applied in the right conditions, evenly and at the correct dosage you can defoliate your lawn in days! I rarely use Lawn Sand because of this so unless you have the experience and confidence I suggest you give Lawn Sand a miss. Ferrous or Iron Sulphate as Fertiliser

This depends on how large your garden is and on what your aim is. If you just want greener, healthier grass, this only requires a weaker mix than if you want to harden the turf of a sports pitch. When iron sulphate isn’t marketed as a moss killer, but as a lawn tonic, hardener or greener, it doesn’t fall under the jurisdiction of the UK’s Health and Safety Executive and these products are usually much cheaper but as they aren’t marketed for moss control, they won’t come with instructions or a safety sheet. We recommend applying iron sulphate once or twice per season – around every 6-8 weeks on average. Liquid Iron Sulphate

Compacted soil restricts the proper formation of deep roots. Grass with shallow roots has a lower chance of surviving and gives way to a wider moss infestation with its strong roots. Aerate your lawn at the proper times in the growing season. Safety

Lawn Care

You can use a spreader but I wouldn’t recommend it as it’s difficult to do accurately as it’s so fine. If using a sprayer which I recommend, especially on a larger lawn, you need to use 5-10g per square meter, or 3-5g per square meter if you want to use it as a lawn tonic to green up your lawn once you killed the moss off. How to spray with a spayer This is either straight ferrous sulphate or perhaps with a little fertiliser added. Just basic ingredients and nothing unique or particularly scientific. Lawn Sand Again, here you would need 4g per m2 for controlling moss. This would then be mixed with 1 litre of water per m2.

Iron sulphate, even at low doses, has the potential to over-acidify the soil, and I saw one case where a gardener had miscalculated the dose and turned his grass yellow – I confirmed this by conducting a pH and nutrient test for him. While it was too late for him to do anything, the best approach would be to water the lawn heavily for a few hours to flush out the chemical. Leaf mould is a great lawn top dressing. Find out how to easily make it. Why does my scarified lawn look terrible? There are a few ways to combat iron toxicity. This includes applying lime, bicarbonates and zinc to your lawn. In addition, you can wash away excess iron and improve your lawn’s drainage. When applied in moderation, iron sulphate can work wonders for your lawn. It will turn your grass lush green, boost soil nutrients, deter lawn pests, and kill stubborn mosses. You can apply iron throughout the year (avoiding June, July, and August). Avoid walking on your lawn for seven days! To summarise, we recommend using no more than 1g per L water on very hot days. If you’re using 2-3g per L, you’ll want to wait until a mild morning with lots of ground moisture. If you use any higher concentrations than this, it’s best to wait until it’s cool and wet. How Often Should I Apply Iron Sulphate?

If you have got sulphate stains then the first option to try is lemon juice or white vinegar. Before you start you should be aware that if these methods work you may end up with part of your surface then showing up as cleaner than the rest. Whenever you’re sprinkling powder or granules, it’s best to wait for a windless day; otherwise, your mix can spread into flower beds. grams per 100 square metres (1.5g – 2g per sq mtr)– Ideal for lawn hardening and will also green up the lawn. When applying sand that contains Iron Sulphate, you need to apply 70g per m2. So, if you have an area of 50m2, that means you’ll need 3,500g (3.5 KG) to cover the whole area. How much iron sulphate to apply when it’s been mixed with fertiliserSome gardeners may put a moss killer down like Iron sulphate before scarifying. It depends on just how mossy or bouncy your lawn is! I tend not to use it and save such treatments only for the worst mossy lawn offenders. The optimum application rate here is 30g per m2. That’s because the fertiliser will contain nitrogen. Therefore any over feeding will result in nitrogen burn. What’s more, it’s usually mixed with Winter fertiliser, so you don’t want to be feeding the lawn too much nitrogen at this time of year anyway. How much soluble iron sulphate to apply
