Description

Army regulations, as well as common sense, required every soldier to carry a plug for the end of the gun barrel to keep out rain, snow, mud, and dirt. A hunter closing in for the kill with his rifle loaded and ready to fire had to remember to remove the plug before firing. To our knowledge there were very few specialist blunderbuss makers in the USA at that time (1790) so it would not be unusual for the U.S. Revenue-Marine to equip with blunderbusses from an Irish or British maker.

In Roald Dahl's 1972 book Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, the spray for aging was delivered in a Flit gun while in Minusland in the 3rd edition with Quentin Blake's illustrations. In North America, imported French and British flints were both widely used, as well as flints from the Netherlands and Nordic countries. In the Eastern United States, Indigenous American people reportedly made their own gun flints by re-working stone spear heads. [14] The 2nd Battalion York Militia was an American Colonist unit raised in Pennsylvania in 1777 and were active during the Revolutionary War, the 1st Company, 2nd Battalion being formed on August 9th under Captain Samuel Ferguson who was killed at the Battle of Brandywine where General George Washington was defeated in battle against the British. Please see links below amongst others for further information. Please note: Not to be confused with the York Militia of Upper Canada in the War of 1812 which was a regiment, not a battalion, and also by then the 39" barrel Pattern 1793 Brown Bess was in service. A Flit gun is a hand-pumped insecticide sprayer used to dispense FLIT, a brand-name insecticide widely used against flies and mosquitoes between 1928 and the mid-1950s. Although named after the well-known brand, "Flit gun" became a generic name for this type of dispenser. [1] Once commonly found in households, hand-operated Flit guns have been replaced by aerosol spray cans and fallen out of common use.If the owner of a firearm that no longer falls within the definition of antique firearm chooses not to licence it, they will need to otherwise dispose of it before the transition period ends. Disposal could include selling, exporting or deactivating the firearm, donating it to a museum or surrendering it to the police. To enable this, owners will be able to freely sell or transfer the firearm to another collector or to a museum without requiring a firearm certificate, section 5 authority or a museum firearms licence. Owners can also sell or transfer the firearm to a dealer, but only one who is registered with the police and who has a section 5 authority. In all cases, the new owner must then apply to the police for a firearm certificate or museum licence in respect of the firearm before the transition period ends. FLAYDERMAN'S GUIDE TO ANTIQUE AMERICAN FIREARMS... and their values", by Norm Flayderman, 9th edition, 2007. Guns by Dudley Pope, 1969, Hamlyn Publishing Group, Ltd. This is an inexpensive large format book with excellent drawings of various firearm mechanisms. For shotguns of around 12 bore, a charge of powder in the range 2 1/2 to 3 drams is ideal. It is always best to start with a low charge and work the charge up to obtain optimum performance. This is very important when using a gun for the first time, whether it be original or reproduction. a b c Whittaker, John (2001). American Rifle: A Treatise, a Text Book, and a Book of Practical Information in the Use of the Rifle" By Townsend Whelen, Publisher: Paladin Press (July 2006) Flints [ edit ] An 1879 illustration showing Brandon gun flint knappers at work Making a gun flint by hand, by knapping, 2014 is placed in the phial. The measuring may be by means of flask dispensing, or shot/powder scoops. For the inexperienced muzzle loader phials, when set out in equal numbers of shot and powder are a useful aid to correct loading as there is a visual indication that the corresponding numbers of powder and shot phials have been used. Also there is an important safety aspect to using phials in that only a small amount of powder is exposed at any time.

Owners of certain firearms previously regarded as antique will be required to obtain a licence following a change in the law, which comes fully into effect on 22 September. Wet or damp guns must never be stored in this condition but should be allowed to dry before placing in the cabinet. The flint strikes the frizzen, a piece of steel on the priming pan lid, opening it and exposing the priming powder. a b White, David (12 August 2014). "Brandon Gun Flint Knapping". In France, gun flint production between the 17th and 19th centuries centered around the small towns of Meusnes and Couffy. [13] Meusnes has a small museum dedicated to the industry. A slightly different method of manufacture can allow archaeologists to distinguish between British-made and French made flints. [14] For the beginner the best choice of muzzle loading shotgun is the percussion gun, either single or double barrel, because of its simplicity and reliability. Most muzzle loading shooters prefer to shoot original guns as there is a plentiful supply of good shooting guns in this country and they tend to handle much better than most reproduction guns.Drawing Rods: If during loading a mistake is made e.g. no powder put in, or worse, double loaded, the load must be withdrawn for safety reasons. Under no circumstances should you take a chance and fire the gun. Incorrect loading can easily occur particularly if distracted during the loading process. Conventional screwed cleaning rods can be fitted with a screw or worm attachment. This is then placed in the barrel and progressively screwed into the load column and withdrawn. The contents may then be emptied out. It is advisable to cap off to clear any residual powder before reloading. The Law: The following legal requirements may seem a little complex, but in reality they are generally straightforward. In our experience the Firearms Licensing sections of local police forces and the HSE are helpful and efficient. The powder ignites, and the flash passes through a small hole in the barrel (called a vent or touchhole) that leads to the combustion chamber where it ignites the main powder charge, and the gun discharges.
