Practice, practice, practice…not until you can get it right but until you cannot get it wrong – Julia Smith – audio– video

Tom Gillingwater, professor of anatomy at Edinburgh University, has overall responsibility for the teaching and research activities that involve the body donors. The player needs to understand that they are not supposed to know the answers to the questions straight away, and that they should view them more as riddles. The room is silent. I slowly draw up the equations on the board. I utter not a word while doing so. And then I turn to my class, still not talking, and I wait for them to tell me what I just did.The first time I used the silent teacher strategy was when teaching calculating percentages of amounts. I asked the children for silence and explained that I was going to show them a process without any teacher talk and they would then explain in as much detail as possible what I had done. So I wrote out the process, got them to explain it and I then repeated the process so they could again explain, adding any further details they noticed. As I assist beginners in getting started with Elm, I often wonder how we can make learning this programming language easier. This way, I also discovered the ‘Silent Teacher’ shared by @Janiczek at https://discourse.elm-lang.org/t/silent-teacher-a-game-to-teach-basics-of-programming/1490 Not only does it tie in with theories on working memory, but it also involves self-explanation, which in itself is a knowledge-building process.

Of course, evaluating an expression in our brain requires some knowledge of the programming language. So we enter our best guess and initially often get it wrong. This is the simplest of our courses. It focuses on calculating proportions and cross multiplying, concepts that many adults don't master. Shortcomings

Develop competing hypotheses when observing teaching and learning – Ollie Lovell and Craig Barton – video Doing rather than telling is actually a powerful way for children to learn as they have to focus more and it reduces their cognitive load. Why teach the silent way? Through masterful editing, much of the story is told through conversations and slice-of-life scenes — and there is much material to choose from as the director spent a year documenting Lin’s life, after Hsu’s body arrived at Fu Ren. For example, we only learn that he visits his wife’s body often through his casual banter with the medical staff. Lin is an ideal candidate for this type of story — he appears optimistic most of the time as we watch him try to carry on with his life — even posing for selfies in a karaoke bar. His positive attitude makes the film less heavy, but his grief is still there, and our hearts break when he breaks down.

They understand too that this was ‘somebody’. When I heard that they call them (the donated bodies) silent teachers, I went away feeling really happy instead of upset. When the player’s answer is incorrect, he is presented with another question of the same kind. The questions are already fixed in advance, but thanks to a random selection of numbers and letters in the case of a wrong answer, the player has to work things out by trial and error. Silent Teacher originally started out in coding, and our coding courses can be done completely independently. Our mathematics courses are also accessible online, but these require the discreet presence and guidance of a teacher. For beginners who have never coded - those who always wanted to give it a try but were never brave enough to start, or else people who, out of curiosity, want to know a bit more about it (for example, to better understand the job of their partner, friend or work colleague). Warning: a minimum ability to do arithmetics is necessary, not adapted to very young children. Specificities Silence is golden. It is also a highly engaging and effective way to teach and has a dramatic impact on classroom management.

The first time you teach without talking

He said: “The donor bodies we utilise are at the heart of everything we do in anatomy. When we receive a donor body into the university, they become a ‘silent teacher’. The interface is minimalist, we want players to be focused on the questions and nothing else, and once again we don’t want any teacher around. When the player finishes a level, an abstract spiral shaped design appears. The player will gradually realize that it is a sort of recap of his progress. The button to access the recap only appears after the player finishes several levels.
