Description

The earrings pay homage to Japanese hanafuda playing cards, traditionally floral in design (“hanafuda” means “flower cards”). Instead of alienating viewers in China, Korea, and elsewhere, Demon Slayer has instead been able to thrive on the back of its willingness to adapt, demonstrating that this minor alteration was absolutely the right decision.

Importantly though, the sun is critical in the backstory of Tanjiro’s family history, and in the plot as a whole, and so this symbolism makes sense within the story. However, due to the Japanese military flying the imperial flag during World War Two, the old flag design has become a controversial image in Asian countries that were at war with and occupied by the Japanese military.

This has two-pronged support, both with the cultural significance of anime and the rising sun in Japan, and with the significance of the sun in the anime. Like many popular animated series originating in Japan, Demon Slayer started life in manga form, serialized in the Weekly Shonen Jump manga magazine. However, the controversy surrounding Tanjiro's earrings arose because the design also resembles a Rising Sun, the symbol Japan used in World War II. While the new design is still similar to the original, in the altered version the petals of the flower–or the rays of the sun, depending on how you look at it–have been replaced with a simple set of horizontal lines, running below a red circle.

Magnetic The earrings are very light, in the ears feel comfortable, do not cause irritation, you can wear them all day. The design of the earrings serves as a connection to Yoriichi Tsugikuni and the Sun Breathing Style, making Tanjiro the successor, and puts him on the radar of the villain Muzan. The earrings, despite having lost their meaning to mortals, did in fact represent the bearer's understanding of those secret arts that Muzan had so aggressively tried to eradicate. That much is explained in a flashback that a demon slayer with the same earrings – Yoriichi – had nearly defeated Muzan. So, what was the ‘Tanjiro earing controversy’ and what changes did the anime make following the incident? Despite the fact that the author does not provide much direct information to the reader, we can presume Yoriichi entrusted the Hinokami Kagura technique and Hanafuda earrings to the Kamado family. One of the trademark accessories that Demon Slayer fans will recognize are the design of Tanjiro Kamado’s earrings.
