Blame that cat food commercial with the white Persian eating gourmet food out of a crystal bowl for this one. Some research has revealed that white cats tend to be more timid than cats of other colors, and if you were a shy kid like I was, you probably got called a snob because your fear of approaching people was mistaken for arrogance and condescension. After his Oscar win in 2022 for his stunning documentary Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival and its ties to the Civil Rights Movement, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson has lined up his next directing project: a remake of the Disney classic (and, let’s face it, one of the greatest Disneys) The Aristocats. On June 18th, 2018, Know Your Meme [5] user Cold Hard Crash uploaded a screenshot of the post, with the post accumulating over 144,600 views in two years. On July 23rd, 2018, Redditor [1] AncientHistory made a post containing extensive information about the cat and its role in H.P. Lovecraft's life. It is essential to recognize that these reactions are not a result of your cat being racist, but rather a response to something they are not used to. Exposing your feline friend to a diverse range of people and experiences is key in helping them become more receptive and adaptable. Encouraging positive socialization in cats As mentioned above, Puss in Boots is a character who was made popular in the Shrek franchise , but most people would be mortified if anyone heard them saying this name out loud.

Choosing an inappropriate cat name could lead to awkward situations with friends, family, and even your vet. On April 23rd, 2018, Redditor Lavonicus posted an image of their cat named Professor Jones to /r/cats, [1] captioning the image, "When you accidentally switch to the front facing camera," and earning over 140 upvotes in five years (shown below). It’s not clear where Lovecraft’s racism and xenophobia originated, though his upbringing may naturally have had a lot to do with it. Even his biographer and ardent supporter S.T. Joshi notes that Lovecraft’s love of science wouldn’t have supported his views, since “the brute fact is that by 1930 every ‘scientific’ justification for racism had been demolished.” What is clear is that by the early 1930s, Lovecraft was passionately espousing his racist viewpoints in letters to friends, defending white lynch mobs, and trumpeting Hitler with praise that may seem eerily familiar these days: “I know he’s a clown but god I like the boy!”)

Return to Neveryon is a series of eleven novellas, all set in the fictional land of Neveryon, a civilization that reigned in prehistoric times on Earth, though the exact location is unclear. Most of the novellas feature different characters but all of them are in Neveryon and all are connected to the overarching storyline which centers on Gorgik the Liberator.

As you can see, there are quite a few names which shouldn’t be used for cats anymore and some that never should have been used in the first place.

Following the later cross-platform virality of Uncanny Cat memes in June 2023, one of the main proponents of the meme within the DEAD AHEAD Discord server, user 15placek, claimed that "the origins of the uncanny and canny cat shit is racism" in a June 2023 message [14] (shown below).Do your cats fit these stereotypes, or don’t they? Have you seen other kitty “racial profiles”? Share your thoughts (and pictures of your feline family) in the comments! Still, there’s an extent to which all of this discussion has been taking place within Lovecraft’s niche community of genre writers — still well below the mainstream radar, away from the broader influence of his work. (As late as 2014, it was possible to read Lovecraft explainers in media outlets that made no mention of his racism.) That might finally be changing with HBO’s Lovecraft Country now spotlighting the conversation around the author’s racist legacy — but it also inevitably yields frustration because Lovecraftian imagery and themes are so embedded within the pop culture landscape. On the same day, Tumblr user robloxgf responded, "what was his name," later adding "oh no." The conversation (shown below) received over 204,800 likes and reblogs in two years. Ah, this myth rears its ugly head again. The truth is that people who think a cat is going to have a certain temperament will approach that cat with the expectation of that behavior. And then there’s the classic “Texas Sharpshooter” logical fallacy — finding a pattern to fit a presumption — which causes people to chalk up perfectly normal cat behavior to “tortitude.” Cthulhu rising #cthulhu #cthulhumythos #oilpainting #oleo #painting #pintura #oiloncanvas #oleosobrelienzo #art #arte #sea #mar #cosmicterror #terrorcosmico #lovecraft

At this point, I feel that the amount of feline Molly’s far exceeds the number of humans that hold the name. Necessarily, Lovecraft Country’s approach to Lovecraft’s legacy is simultaneously one of shrewd affection and resigned repugnance. For the problem with Lovecraft is that Lovecraft is everywhere. His influence is so ubiquitous within horror and fantasy that you simply can’t ignore it — nor is it always easy or simple to subvert it.

Sensitive content

When Okorafor wrote a blog post about how conflicted she felt that “a statuette of this racist man’s head is one of my greatest honors as a writer,” including in it Lovecraft’s most overtly racist piece of writing, she drew inescapable new attention to a subject that had largely been buried and forgotten. For years, this hideous bust of Lovecraft was what you won if you won a World Fantasy Award. Ravenous Monster There’s also an element of an incredible voyage inherent in these stories, which borrows from the influence of other pulpy 19th-century writers like Jules Verne. Often, Lovecraft’s characters are doomed travelers or explorers who make dark treks across the Earth — or even just across New England — to find a lost city, or to find and read a forbidden book. And let’s make no bones about it. Lovecraft was an avid, loud, horrific racist — suffice it to say you’ll probably fail this “Hitler or Lovecraft?” quiz — and on top of his frequent racist rants in letters and discussions with friends, his racist fears infuse and inform nearly all of his work. Famous Lovecraft short stories like “ The Shadow over Innsmouth” (about a seaport town of murderous cultists who are secretly mating with terrifying fish people) and “ The Horror of Red Hook” (a story full of textual xenophobia and horror at New York’s immigration influx and the “primitive half-ape savagery” of nonwhite New Yorkers) may be beloved and hugely influential, but they’re also built on overt racist metaphors. Often these metaphors involve his deep fear of miscegenation (race-mixing), hereditary evil, and his concern that he himself might have an impure bloodline, which all takes his “monster is me” trope in a terrible direction. Their beautiful prose and deft ability to write from a variety of voices creates a rich and complex narrative that Shawl uses to fill readers with both hope and insight into a tragic period of history.
