Annis also learns family history passed down by her mother from her grandmother, Mama Aza, that grounds their origins in Africa.

Annis is marched, along with dozens of other slaves the entire way, through every hellscape imaginable. After working in their master's home, her mother takes Annis into the trees and teaches the lessons her own mother once taught her. How did Annis and others retain their sense of self and their sense of hope when day in and day out, both were constantly negated?Annis compares her journey through a different type of hell with what she heard in that book alongside other illusions to bees and to water. I thought the story kind of devolved in the second half of the novel into a convoluted thriller involving the mafia and missing treasure. I had a harder time discerning Ward's carefully constructed allegory and longed for the 'simpler' feel the story had at the beginning, of the enduring love and strength of the women in Annis' family.

Annis’ sense of hope springs from her imagination and belief in her own strength, to be regarded, and to regard. As Uma readies for the high seas alongside Harry, son of Captain Hook, Gil, son of Gaston, and the toughest rogues on the Isle of the Lost, the reformed villains of Auradon devise their own master plan, and with King Ben away on royal business, they won't have to play by all the rules. There are tons of villain kids on the Isle of the Lost who are eager for their chance to come to Auradon Prep-even Celia, Dr. Even as the physical reality grows shockingly clear in “Let Us Descend,” Ward also imagines the spiritual terrain that enslaved Americans may have traversed. Here we meet young Annis as a child, learn she was the child of the rape of her mother by their owner, Sire. Grave Descend is a lighting quick read, full of action and intrigue, just what you'd expect from a Hard Case read. The thing that keeps Annis going and gives her comfort are her memories of her mother and a spirit that seems to accompany her and her line of ancestors.

The job looks to be an easy pay off until McGregor discovers the yacht he’s to investigate hasn’t sunk yet. Here she does indeed amplify the voices of those who were forced to undergo a Dante’s Inferno of tragedy, in the person of young Annis, who is sold south by her white sire. I am so grateful to Scribner for providing me with an early copy of this book written by one of my literary goddesses in exchange for an honest review.I’m not sure if there are more books featuring McGregor, but GRAVE DESCEND certainly left the impression that this protagonist was designed to be a series character. She tells the story here of Annis, who at a young age watches as here mother is literally sold down the river headed for New Orleans. But before the seniors can don their custom-designed caps and gowns, courtesy of Evie, they've got an epic plan to put into action. i’m not saying that’s what happened, but you can definitely spot the bond-movie structure that he’s borrowing here. The Descendants Novels are a series of books based on the Descendants franchise, written by Melissa de la Cruz.

Annis, sold south by the white enslaver who fathered her, is the listener’s guide through this hellscape. Descendants: Mal • Jay • Evie • Carlos De Vil • Ben • Audrey • Lonnie • Jane • Chad Charming • Doug • Belle • Beast • Fairy Godmother • Snow White • Queen Leah • Maleficent • Jafar • The Evil Queen • Cruella De Vil • Coach Jenkins • Mr. While Ward leads readers through the descent, this, her fourth novel, is ultimately a story of rebirth and reclamation. As Annis descends deeper into her own enslavement she remembers and has reverence for her mother and her grandmother Mama Aza. Since 2015, there have been four novels, including Escape from the Isle of the Lost, which is set for release on June 4, 2019.

She is sold south from the rice fields of the Carolinas to walk the miles long march of the slaves to the slave markets of New Orleans and ends up at a Sugar Plantation in Louisiana where she and the other slaves are treated so brutally. Too many novels dawdle and sag in the middle, drooping between the tautness of an intriguing start and the firmness of a dramatic conclusion.
