Description

The basing is extremely simple, just Agrellan Earth, dried in the sun for an hour or so, then some Middenland Tufts applied.

For these and the Thousand Sons I matched the paint schemes in the How to Paint Citadel Miniatures book. Famed for the 4 step paint process, these were fun.

Tones

Following the basecoat, I go into my first shade. For my shade, I use Guilliman Flesh Contrast Paint thinned down about 2:1 with Contrast Medium . In retrospect, I think this left the shade a bit too light and I had to hit some areas an extra time, so a 1:1 mix would also probably work. The final model is one I’m very happy with, and that I think very effectively matches up with the 2nd edition codex style.

Next up I did a basecoat of Ultramarines Blue Contrast Paint to lay down the base color. Swiftblade recommended I use Macragge Blue but I didn’t have any of that sitting around and this is basically the same shade. Bring up the cloaks with coats of Xereus Purple, re-darkening some of the recesses on the front of the shoulders with Naggaroth. In similar fashion, I’m doing the gold here with Retributor Armour and shading it with Agrax Earthshade, while the piping is done by first painting Caliban Green then highlighting that with Waaagh Flesh. You could also start with Waaagh and shade with Coelia Greenshade if you were feeling so inclined. The final highlights are done with either Death Guard Green or Moot Green, depending on how bright I want to go. Jain Zar by Gav Thorpe also features the Drukhari in significant fashion and gives them some real show-stealing scenes.

Step 5(Left)- This layer is a mix of Hyek Yellow and Dead White. Hit a smaller portion of the Screaming Skull to build up a brighter highlight. Alongside this new content, all of your favourite features and showcases return, with battle reports and designers’ notes from the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 and a handy set of pop-out reference cards. Please note that this product has been delayed in Japan. Much like the smaller sets, this box also contains a handbook, as well as a full Core Rules Booklet. This has all the core rules for the new edition and the rules for the fast and fun Combat Patrol mode , including six missions. You’ll also get dice, tokens, a range ruler, and a Space Marine transfer sheet. Librarian in Terminator Armour

Finally, the Necropolis Stalker is an interesting model because while huge, it actually doesn’t have a lot of detail, and the swords draw the eye quite a bit at the same level as the face it has. For that reason I wanted to make the guards stand out a bit, and applied some Seraphim Sepia to them to give the bone on the handles a more aged look, as if they were crafted from something different than the Bonereapers themselves. Otherwise, he follows the same scheme as the others, layering various levels of the colors into one another over successive coats. I glued these into their base, and that later made getting a brush to the inside of the cloak a pain. Even if you’re planning to glue them down, I’d push-fit till the cloaks are done. For the Mortek Guard below, this would be about what I’d consider finished. At this point it’s just a matter of doing any final touch up and deciding on a basing scheme, but I think the shield especially shows the way these two contrasting colors can really pop when successive layers of the colors blended together are applied. Also, as a note, that is NOT the standard shield; I was given the model without an arm and converted a shield for him. It’s like the same size as him, and he is my cute smol skeleton son now.

And now it’s time for washes! I wash the gold bits with Agrax Earthshade and the silver bits with Nuln Oil. What’s that? Yeah, you need to know what paints you wanted to buy for the color scheme you just made up? Some Retributor Armour and Mournfang Brown, both washed with Agrax, was used to detail the scabbards and a few other things.
