Customers have long asked Fujifilm for more affordable versions of popular lenses, and with the XC series, the manufacturer has responded (to me at least) surprisingly well. Wheres other major brands usually also sacrifice image quality in cheap lenses, this one is an excellent performer. The manual focus is electronically coupled to the camera. There is no full-time manual override, you have to switch the camera to manual focus mode to use it. It turns smoothly, but I found that (at least on the X-T200), it’s not really precise. We’ll wait until we can run a production sample through our lab tests before we reach a definite conclusion, but the signs are that this modest-looking and affordable lens will actually perform very well. Early verdict This lens offers an angle-of-view equivalent to a 53mm lens in a 35mm system, similar to that of the human eye, and a bright f/2 maximum aperture for low-light shooting. XC is Fuji's line of optically excellent but inexpensive plastic-barreled lenses for their X-mount APS-C cameras.

All X system cameras sport the same sensor size, the APS-C format. The sensor format is smaller than full-frame alternatives, but lends itself to generally smaller, lighter lenses, and is a boon for action photographers who strive to get a bit more effective reach without having to grab an extreme telephoto lens. I find it very hard to argue with the price and image quality of the Fujifilm XC 35mm f/2. I highly recommend it for any lower-budget photographer using Fujifilm gear. Because X cameras are all APSC sensors the 35mm has an effective focal length of 52.5mm, so this is essentially a nifty fifty f2. By default then it’s great for portraits and all around shooting, and the Bokeh at this focal length at the maximum aperture of f2 is really nice. Fuji 35mm f2 review sample image

In our view, their efforts have been very successful for a standard prime lens - see the examples below. It's softer in the corners at very close distances, and has lower contrast in the center wide-open due to spherical aberration. Stop down at macro distances if you're shooting test charts in a lab. The same concept carries over to the X system, a camera line with style and handling inspired by the X100, but with swappable glass. It launched in early 2012 with the X-Pro1 and a handful of prime lenses. Fujifilm X-T4 with XF 16-80mm

The lens drops some of the features found in the XF 35mm—weather protection and an aperture control ring—and also uses a plastic mount instead of the metal in the XF series. I wouldn't fret about the mount, as modern plastics are sturdy and it's light enough to not put any stress on the mount. Fujifilm X-T200, f/2, 1/750-second, ISO 200 The XF 35mm f/2 is an older, more expensive metal version. The XF version is much more durable and has the luxury of a real metal aperture ring. Unlike on many Fujifilm lenses, there is no aperture ring on the Fujifilm XC 35mm f/2. You have to use one of your camera’s customizable dials. Fujifilm cameras are usually well-equipped with these, but it becomes a problem on the X-T200, which only has two. If you map them to shutter speed and aperture respectively, the only way you can change the third parameter (ISO or compensation) is through the Q menu. Full-frame owners often point to a Nifty Fifty lens—typically an inexpensive 50mm f/1.8—as the first one to get to supplement a basic zoom. The comfortable angle of view, bright aperture, and typical low asking price are the obvious reasons. Each takes exactly the same pictures. Both take 43mm filters, have the same 1.1'/0.35m close-focus distance, the same macro reproduction ratio, the same rounded 9-blade diaphragms stopping down to f/16 and both have 9 elements in 6 groups, with two aspherical elements each. The XF version also claims two ED elements, and for all I know could be the exactly same optics in these two lenses. Recommendations top If this 1,200×900 pixel crop is about 12" (30cm) wide on your screen, then the complete image printed at this same extreme magnification would be about 42 × 62" (3.5 × 5.2 feet or 1.05 × 1.6 meters). This is the third 35mm lens Fujifilm has made for its X-mount cameras, which might sound confusing, but each has its place. At first, this one might seem unnecessary because the regular XF35mm F2 is hardly expensive – but at the entry-level end of the market, its new low price could make a considerable difference to photographers just starting out and with a restricted budget. We hope we see a few more low-cost XC lenses like this one!

The XC 35mm f/2 is built on Fujifilm’s X-mount for APS-C mirrorless cameras. This lens mount has been around for around a decade now, which has allowed it to develop into a well-versed system. Memory Cards & Storage SD Cards Micro SD cards CFexpress cards Compact Flash and CFast cards Card Readers SSD and USB Drives Scanners The lens is nearly distortion-free, but it does exhibit moderate vignetting. Both of these, however, are corrected by default in Lightroom with no option to turn corrections off. I had to tweak metadata in the RAW files to be able to see the real performance. I’d argue that Fujifilm should keep this option in the hands of end-users. Ultimately, the result is that you will not encounter lens deficiencies in either RAW or JPEG formats. You will see more noise towards the corners where vignetted areas have been lifted up. Lens sharpness has nothing to do with picture sharpness; every lens made in the past 100 years is more than sharp enough to make super-sharp pictures if you know what you're doing. The only limitation to picture sharpness is your skill as a photographer. It's the least talented who spend the most time worrying about lens sharpness and blame crummy pictures on their equipment rather than themselves. Skilled photographers make great images with whatever camera is in their hands; I've made some of my best images of all time with an irreparably broken camera! Most pixels are thrown away before you see them, but camera makers don't want you to know that. The out of focus areas are quite good in this XC35mm lens. Just like with the XF35mm f/2R, it gives you nice rounded, smooth specular highlights, and it swirls a little near the edges. Fall-off from infects to out of focus is really nice and clean. Bokeh looks nice and cleanFujifilm released a slew of new products today, including the GF45-100mm f/4, the X-T200 as well as this lens. I had all of the products at my house over the holidays, but I simply didn’t have the time required to do write-ups on all of them. I chose to do a writeup on the product that spoke most to me. And oddly enough, that was this budget 35mm lens.
