The Ospreys players and staff never doubted him. James Hook was playing a lot at 10 when Dan came through but we then played Dan at 10 and James at 12. The design of the English schoolcap was fairly standard. There were two primary variables One was the crown, but we have not noted major differences here over time. Two was the peak. The blue and red colour scheme did not last very long as two examples of hat bands held in the school archive show it was replaced by the green and red scheme that we still use today. We've been fortunate during my coaching time, there was a lot of competition with Dan, Stephen Jones, Rhys Priestland and James Hook. He deserves the accolade. Dan has said the captaincy won't change him and that's spot on. Wayne will not want him to change because that's why he has got to this point. He's a born leader, he will inspire and motivate players around him. He'll take it all in his stride, he's experienced - he's been on two Lions tours. Uses- This hat can be used for a variety of things – in fact, the things are outnumbered. What is that event you have to attend? Is it formal or casual? This hat can never disappoint you. You are covered because, with this hat, your outfit would be complete and amazing. Do you want to go fishing, skiing, hunting, golfing, touring, and so on? This hat is the best choice, no lie.

Whilst the document is undated Miss Gilliland’s headship was between 1904 and 1919. The school magazine published in the spring term of 1913 includes the phrase “we have a blue & red hat band.” This photograph of St Catherine’s Day 1940 at Dorchester with the Bishop of Salisbury (Rev EN Lovett) shows the pupils wearing winter hats with a down turned brim and carrying their gas masks. Germany in the early 20th century had perhaps the premier education system in the world. The system was eroded by the NAZIs during the Third Reich, but Germany continueds to have one of the best education system in the world. Perhaps no other quality education system has had to adapt to such wide swings in educational philosophy as the German syste. Educarors have worked under a conservative monarchy, a liberal democracy, the Third Reich, foreign military occupation, Communism and today's uninted democratic Germany. Throughout all of this the state has been the center of German education. Private schools have never been as important in Germany as in Britain and America. Tooday there is a debate in Germany over educational philosophy. The same debate is being persued in America and other Western European countries, but there are some unique aspects to the German debate because of the unqiue German historical expeuence as well as social attitudes.

Design

A hat with an identifiable band was the first piece of school uniform introduced in the early years of the 20 th Century when the school was in Acton. Most times, he wears a baseball cap, that is why I indicated that there are a lot of theories regarding the type of hat Angus Young wears. He is a fierce competitor on the field who has overcome adversity, and a gentleman off the pitch who has been shaped by his family - particularly his mum Liz, who sadly died last year before seeing him lead his country or play a Lions Test. His mum Liz was at every game and would be immensely proud - you can see where he gets his qualities from. Biggar, 32, has travelled on two British and Irish Lions tours and started three Tests against South Africa in 2021.

Easy to loose: One of the reasons that boys disliked their school caps was that they were a lot of bother. They were easily left behind in a car or bus. They could also be lost in the wind when cycling to school. Ronnie Briggs was an Irish schoolboy international who joined Manchester United straight from school in Aug 1958, signing as a professional on his 17th birthday. He was still a novice when his first senior opportunity came on January 21st 1961, and he had a nightmare start at Filbert Street where Leicester City ran up six goals without reply.German boys had satchels and cases to take their supplies and equipment to school and we rarely see the supplies and equipment that they carried to school and used there. The major uitems of course were books. Younger boys had slates in their satchels. This could be used rather than paper at school. Note the rags and sponges hanging from the satchels. These were to clean the slates. There must have been chalk to use on the slates. Boys also had copy books. tThey used pens that were dippened in ink wells. Copy books were more common in Europe than America. I am not sure precisely how they were used. Some boys may have had fountain pens. Some classes has abacuses. We are not sure if the children brought abacuses to school in their satchels. Presumably there were also rulers and protractors. When his sister shared her idea, his brothers made fun of him saying he would look like some 9 years old on stage. But regardless of what they said, Angus heeded the idea and didn’t let go of wearing the hats. Here is the Dan Biggar story, told by some of the coaches who have helped him throughout his career.
