He is perhaps most well known for his live shows, including Larks in Transit, Qualmpeddler, Limboland, and The Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra. Mark Robert Bailey [8] was born on 13 January 1965 in Bath, Somerset, [9] son of Christopher [10] and Madryn [11] Bailey. Packed with wisdom and humour, Bill Bailey aims for the heart of pure joy and contentment—and how we can all achieve it.

Bailey started studies for an English degree at Westfield College of the University of London, but left after a year. He is also the author of Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide to British Birds and Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide to Happiness . Bailey has a carnivorous pitcher plant named after him, Nepenthes x Bill Bailey, created by Borneo Exotics in Sri Lanka. A modified version of it also proved successful in America, and in 2002 Bailey released a CD of a recording at the WestBeth Theatre in New York City. His musical routines include performing " The Star-Spangled Banner" in a minor key and performing the Hokey Cokey in the style of the electronic band Kraftwerk. The two-disc set also contained a director's cut of Bewilderness, which featured a routine on Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time not seen in the original version. One minute we are wild swimming in an Icelandic Lake, Paddleboarding on the Thames or being invited on stage at Sonisphere Festival, the next he is talking about having a clear out or going cycling.

In November 2009 he was a guest on Private Passions, the biographical music discussion programme on BBC Radio 3. The show's attendances were not impressive and on one occasion the only person in the audience was comedian Dominic Holland. He is a patron of International Animal Rescue and has been instrumental in the organisation's campaign to rescue dancing bears. He’s having a fast-forward of his own political evolution, having to become 'a politician' – the thing he never was.I’ve read a few books on the subject of happiness, and zen, or rather, living in the modern world and not being very content. Whether it's what they eat, where they fly to or how they communicate, these birds are always fascinating, and he introduces us to their weird and wonderful ways in a manner that is always entertaining. He is known for his role as Manny in the sitcom Black Books [3] and for his regular appearances on the panel shows Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Have I Got News for You, and QI, as well as for his stand-up comedy work. During this time he also left his position as "curator" of the Museum of Curiosity, and declared his intention to "retire" from panel games, although he has since appeared on QI many more times and hosted Have I Got News For You. If you’re a parent who’d like to appear a bit clever when your child asks you the name of a bird; if you want to find a new and healthy hobby that takes you outdoors; or whether, quite simply, you want to understand a bit more about our natural environment and have a laugh at the same time, this is the perfect companion book to have.

A beautifully and originally designed hardback, it will delight Bailey’s fans as well as those who like a bit of armchair escapism. Amongst the other nominees was future Black Books co-star Dylan Moran, who narrowly beat him in the closest vote in the award's history. The most recent ones would probably be Russell Brands book on mentors and Robert Webb’s book about being a boy. He won the competition with his partner, Oti Mabuse, becoming the show's oldest winner at 55, displacing the previous oldest winner Joe McFadden. Bailey was educated at King Edward's School, [18] an independent school in Bath, [19] where he was initially a highly academic pupil. In February 2007, Bailey appeared twice with the BBC Concert Orchestra and Anne Dudley in a show entitled Cosmic Shindig.

As he has said about those formative years, ‘birdwatching gave a purpose to the day and a love of the natural world which has carried on into my adult life’.
