A nice thing for me was that he had a boyfriend, Anselm, that was mentioned and talked about. Their relationship and how it ended just seemed so believable, so truthful. (Not to mention the fact that we love good queer representation.) Skulduggery is different in this story, and it is in my opinion very accurate considering what he has been through so very recently. I have always been a big fan of the Skulduggery Pleasant universe and book series and so it's always nice to have new releases following the end of a Phase of the main books even though this wasn't anything incredible or innovative, it did keep me entertained and having a good time whilst I read it. I will say halfway through I DID NOT expect that plot twist, and it was quite out of left field but can why am I not surprised with the way phase 2 was handled. That’s where the disappointment sets in because while I’m all for it, this new direction/pattern is something that hasn’t made me want to re-read the newer books compared to the way I used to want to read the phase one books. Set only 13 years after Skulduggery’s family and wife are murdered and set in Italy, 1700’s, we see Skulduggery in a completely different light than we usually do: he’s darker, brooding and incredibly impulsive. His wit and humour is quite flat, unlike how we first met him all those books ago in the first of the series, which honestly, is a contrast I’m genuinely happy and excited for.
