I did notice a slight coil whine noise when devices were fully charged — this isn’t all that uncommon with wireless chargers, but not all of them do it, so it’s worth noting that this one does. So far as I can tell, all it would take is tweaking the plastic nub that covers the male USB-C/Thunderbolt port, since that seems to be the limiting component (not enough clearance). While the iPad is still limited compared to a more traditional laptop computer due to its reliance on Apple’s iPadOS operating system, it’s still a capable device, especially since Apple switched over to using a USB-C port instead of its proprietary Lightning port.

The ideal iPad docking station that expands more than your desktop options andndash; it expands your creativity. Now that iPadOS has proper mouse/trackpad support as well as the ability to use external keyboards, I didn't find myself using the touchscreen much, but it is still an option while attached to the stand. However, the lack of a user-accessible file system in iOS is a ridiculous deal-breaker for a real computer.A few months ago I bought an M1 Mac Mini, which is an impressive piece of hardware, but I must say that file management is probably a big reason Apple hasn't made many inroads into the business market. That being said, the magnetic holder where the iPad connected to (via USB Type-C) has a 120-degree adjustable hinge.

Clearly, this wouldn’t work for everyone, as not everyone can get away with using only iPadOS applications to get their work done. I'm already used to using the iPad Pro with the keyboard and trackpad built into the Magic Keyboard case, and in this dock the computer-like experience becomes even more compelling -- and sometimes uncanny. If you have a wireless keyboard and mouse (or, just plug in wired ones to the extra ports on the StudioDock), you're good to go. The StudioDock is mostly made from aluminum and is sturdy enough that you can adjust the iPad’s position without it moving on your desk, making it easy to switch between portrait and landscape modes or tilt the vertical viewing angle. His exact words were that there's literally nothing I could do on an Android that his iPhone couldn't do. The magnetic holder also leaves space for the camera (so you won’t have to worry about scratching it), as well for the Apple Pencil and an optional magnetic Apple Watch charging module (coming sometime in mid-2021), which pleasantly sits alongside the iPad.

Apple ecosystem charging includes Qi wireless iPhone and AirPod charging, as well as optional charging for Apple Watch (K34032WW, sold separately) and the iPad itself. You won’t get the fastest speeds out of them, but the ability to charge a phone and AirPods throughout the day is useful and saves space on your desk compared to separate pads. My background includes an MFA in theater which I apply to thinking about immersive experiences of the future. You’d have to be really into the iPad-as-work-machine lifestyle for this to make sense for you, but the StudioDock and iPad Pro combination is a fast, fun computer that does most of what I want it to.It’s constructed almost entirely out of aluminum, which gives the StudioDock a premium feel and also serves to better keep the stand in place when attaching, rotating and tilting the iPad. The build quality of the stand itself is solid, though the plastic back panel does feel a little low rent. If I were traveling, my midrange Samsung tablet with the above mentioned external accessories (already have the case) would be a quite acceptable travel computer versus my much bigger laptop.
